In a Sunday Oregonian article Julie Tripp wrote about how" all insurance companies assure us that their claims process is a snap, their premiums are low and their service is great." The article reveals how Captive insurance companies ( a "Captive Agent" can only offer that companies insurance products) like Allstate, State Farm, Farmers, Nationwide, American Family and others suck you into believing that if your paying too much for insurance you need to switch companies. These companies are marketing to you on an emotional appeal and have you think that if you can save yourself $500 annually that you will actually get better coverage and better service although as Julie explains this is not always the case. |

Oregon ballot measure to ban the use of credit scoring for insurance policies loses |

Ballot Measure #42 which would have banned the use of credit for rating and purposes was rejected by 65% of Oregon voters. In 2003 Oregon Legislature passed Senate Bill 260, which prohibits the use of credit scoring to increase premium for existing policyholders, and prohibits insurers from using credit records to cancel or not renew existing policyholders. |

The more things change in Oregon's insurance industry, the more they stay the same, according to local industry officials. Even as national banks grow their insurance businesses through local acquisitions, and as direct marketers that largely depend on toll-free numbers and Internet-based service establish a more ubiquitous presence on TV, in print media and consumers' mailboxes, the state's independent agencies -- or businesses that sell multiple companies' insurance lines -- continue to thrive. What's more, local agents and face-to-face service remain a fundamental and vital part of insurance companies' growth strategies. |
